
When he was 27, he enrolled in the National Theatre School of Denmark at which point he graduated in 1995. In addition to his role as The Killing's lead actor, he also appeared in two other critically acclaimed Danish dramas: Those Who Kill, and Borgen III. He also played in episodes of the BBC drama Sherlock as Charles Augustus Magnussen (blackmailer). He played the role of Russia's president on the American television show House of Cards. He received an International Emmy Award for 2018 for his role on the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. It was shown in the UK in 2019 under the name Ride Upon the Storm. Mikkelsen is fluent in English, Swedish, German, and Danish as well as his mother tongue. He has also learned various accents. According to Mikkelsen's sources the story, he and his brother were taught English through Monty Python records.
