Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder that was rooted in the word association when she was a toddler. Ford started acting in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that this was not the best place for her. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. One of her classmates included Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining her attention.
